Care and Use of Concrete

The following information is a guide to keeping concrete pieces finished with either Mojo Concrete's Thin Film Sealing System or Reactive Concrete Treatment looking their best. If you have not selected a finish, please read Selecting the Right Sealing Sysyem for Concrete here.

  • Clean up spills in a timely manner. Substances left on the concrete for greater lengths of time have a higher likelihood of staining. Pieces finished with the Thin Film Sealing System have a very high degree of stain resistance but are not stain proof. Pieces finished with the Reactive Concrete Treatment have moderate stain resistance and are particularly vulnerable to acidic substances.
  • Use a soft cloth and a ph-neutral cleaner. Mojo Concrete recommends the use of micro fiber cloths and Simple Green for routine cleaning.
  • Abrasive cleaners should NOT be used (Comet, Soft Scrub).
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: for example acetone, lacquer thinner, and xylene.
  • Avoid cleaners that contain ammonia or bleach.
  • Avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar. This also includes glass cleaners such as Windex.
  • Use cutting boards for food preparation. Do NOT cut directly on counters.
  • Do NOT drag heavy object across the counters. Pots and pans should be checked to see if there are any burs on the bottoms that may cause scratches. Some dishware and pottery, particularly hand-made items, may have sharp edges or rough bottoms. Placemats should be used for these types of objects.
  • Concrete is very tolerant to heat, but Mojo Concrete recommends the use of hot pads under hot pots and pans.
  • Recognize that concrete, like natural stone, is a brittle material. A sharp blow from a heavy object like a cast iron pan is likely to chip the concrete.
  • Potted plants should not be set directly on the counters unless they are placed on a glazed porcelain saucer or other waterproof barrier. This is especially important with clay pots.
